A weekend in Oslo (part 1)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This weekend we took a little trip to Oslo and it was just lovely. I am so excited to tell you all about it and share some of the hundreds of photos I took (I won’t subject you to them all, I promise!). I’m going to split it into two parts, with a blog post on each day we spent there. Enjoy!

We flew across after work on Friday night and were checked into our hotel and tucked up by bedtime. After a solid nights sleep, we woke up full of energy and excited to explore a new city.

We wandered around the streets surrounding our hotel and made our way up to the Grünerløkka area. Grünerløkka is a lot edgier than the rest of the city, filled with brightly coloured street art, handmade craft markets and hip bars and restaurants.

After a good mooch around we headed across to Mathallen. We’d read a lot about this online – basically it’s a big ol’ food hall, teeming with stands full of delicious goodies.

We were totally spoilt for choice – there was every time of food you could have wanted on offer and everything looked and smelt amazing! We eventually settled on a pintxos bar, and we definitely made a good choice.

Once we had refuelled, we bundled up again and headed back out to face the cold. We decided to take a stroll down to the harbour area, and passed a lovely little Christmas market on the way.

Now in a suitably festive mood, and bouyed but the gorgeous sunshine, we practically skipped towards the harbour. And what a view we were greeted with!

How gorgeous please?!?! We wandered around for about an hour, just admiring the breathtaking view and taking a bazillion photos. The light was like a photographers dream – everything looked like it had been kissed by the sun.

This area was also full of bars and restaurants, and we headed to one of them to warm up a little bit. We chose the aptly named Beer Palace, where we drank Norwegian beer and watched people play shuffleboard. It was so relaxed and lovely in there.

The shops were pretty lustworthy too – I wanted EVERYTHING in this gorgeous interiors store! So much homeware inspiration <3

Next up we headed to the Winter Wonderland-esque Christmas market that was set up in the main square. It was SO PRETTY with fairylights in all the trees and a big wheel and an ice skating rink and many outlets selling gluhwein. Everything smelled so festive – churros All the Christmas excitement you could wish for!

After all that fresh air we were both well and truly knackered. We headed back to our hotel for a little lie down (read hour long nap), before freshening up for dinner. We decided to spend the evening back in Grünerløkka as we had spied a burger joint that looked pretty good. It was called Døgnvill Burger and it was Saturday night perfection – an extensive drinks menu, huge tasty burgers and super cool music. Unforutantely it was also really dark so I have no good food pics to show you 🙁

We had a couple more drinks back at The Hopyard in Mathallen before stumbling back to our hotel, much warmer now we had our beer jackets on! We proceeded to watch The Inbetweeners movie in bed before having the best sleep ever – all the fresh air and good booze truly knocked us out.

So that was our first day in Oslo! Sorry it’s been a bit picture heavy, but there was just so much to show you. Pop back later in the week to see what we got up to on day 2, plus a few tips on where to stay and how to get there if you fancy a visit yourself.
