So, I’m in a pretty chipper mood this week, and it’s totally down to the fact that I’m off on my first trip of the year this weekend! I haven’t left the country since last October, and 4 months without a flight is a pretty long time for a travel obsessive like me.
The lovely folk at Jet2 are sending Sam and I to Barcelona for three days, and I’m really looking forward to a weekend of tapas eating and seaside views. We’ve both visited the city a couple of times before, but it’s been 4 years since my last trip, so I can’t wait to get reacquainted and see what’s new.
As always, I’ve been planning our trip by creating a little Barcelona bucket list of things we want to see and do while we’re there. Luckily for me, the lovely team at Marco Polo sent me one of their new guides, so Sam and I sat down with it in front of the telly at the weekend and made a list of everything that took our fancy.
First up on our hit list is to take a little wander along the beach. Living in Leeds means we are at least 2 hours away from the coast in both directions, so whenever we visit somewhere with a beach we like to make the most of it! Hopefully there will be a little bit of sunshine and we can enjoy a glass of Sangria while looking out at the sea…
Eat our way around La Boqueria
You guys all know how much I love to pay a trip to a food market whenever I visit a city, and La Boqueria was actually the first one I ever visited! It made me fall in love with the concept, and I can’t wait to go back and reminisce. There are lots of handy recommendations of stalls to try in the Marco Polo guide, so hopefully we’ll get our fill of delicious grub.
Indulge in a spot of shopping
One of my favourite things about visiting any Spanish destination is being able to buy all the gorgeous clothes from Zara and Mango for a fraction of the price! I’ve had my eye on a couple of bits that have been hitting the stores here in the UK, so hopefully I’ll be able to treat myself to something new. I’ll obviously have to have a little nosy in Sephora too…
Drink cava at El Xampanyet
Sam and I visited this tiny little cava bar on our first trip to Barcelona in 2012, and I’d forgotten all about it until I read about it in the Marco Polo guide. It’s decorated with the most gorgeous blue tiles and they serve cava in gorgeous coupe glasses for less than you’d pay for a soft drink in the UK. I’m keen to try some of their tapas this time too.
Some of my happiest memories of my previous trips of Barcelona involve sipping a cocktail and watching the sunset from a rooftop bar – in fact, who am I kidding, this happens on every city break I take! I definitely want to catch the sunset while we’re there (weather permitting!), so if you’ve got any recommendations on the best spots then let me know.
Explore the La Ribera district
One of the areas I’ve never really scratched the surface of in Barcelona is the La Ribera district. Luckily for me, the Marco Polo guide has a discovery tour that details all of the best sights in the area, so Sam and I will be dedicating an afternoon to exploring. I’ll be blogging about the discovery tour once we’re home from the trip, so keep your eyes peeled!
Hang out in Parc de la Ciutadella
One thing I’ve never done on my previous trips to Barcelona is pay a visit to Parc de la Ciutadella, so I’m hoping we get chance to spend a bit of time there this weekend. It looks absolutely beautiful from the photos I’ve seen, so I’m hoping that the weather is warm and sunny enough for us to hang out there for a while.
People watch in Place Reial
Last but by no means least on my Barcelona bucket list is to squeeze in a spot of people watching in Place Reial. This big old square located in the Gothic Quarter is the perfect place to watch the world go by with a cold beer and a couple of tasty Spanish snacks, and I like to visit on every trip to the city.
Ooooooh, writing this post has made me SO EXCITED. Roll on Friday! Have you been to Barcelona before? Let me know if you have any tips…
*This post was sponsored by Marco Polo, but all views and Barcelona excitement are my own…
