My 10 favourite things to do in NYC
I'm very lucky to have been to New York 3 times now, with my last trip being in November last year (it feels weird writing last year!). I like to think that we have seen quite a bit of the Big Apple now (although there is still sooooo much more to see) and so I thought I would do a couple of posts about what we like to get up to there and some tips and tricks. So for today, here are my top 10 favourite things to do in NYC... you have no idea how hard it is to keep it to just 10! 1) Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
This is without a doubt my all time favourite thing to do. Get the subway over to Brooklyn, explore the Brooklyn Bridge park and then start the walk over to Manhattan. The views are incredible and even the hippest of hipsters will feel like they're in a movie.
2) Explore Bedford Avenue
The last two times we have visited New York we have rented Airbnb apartments in Williamsburg in Brooklyn, which I could not recommend more. However, even if you don't stay in the area its well worth crossing the East River for a stroll down Bedford Avenue. The shops are amazing (Catbird is my fave) and there are loads of great places to eat (especially Fornino for yum pizza and The Meatball Shop for meaty amazingness).
3) Eat a Shake Shack burger
Cause, well, YUM. I can highly recommend the SmokeShack burger and the cheese fries. My favourite location is the one in the basement of Grand Central Station.
4) Visit Grand Central Station and stare at the ceiling
Speaking of Grand Central Station, if you're visiting New York you absolutely MUST make a trip there. Go in, stare at the ceiling and just be in awe. It takes my breath away every time - I can't believe that people are lucky enough to pass through their everyday on their commute. Kings Cross, you have got a very long way to go...
5) Walk the High Line
The High Line is an amazing public space that has been created in the tracks of old disused freight trains. It starts in the Meatpacking District and weaves down to Chelsea - the views are superb and it's great to experience the city from a different perspective.
6) Seek out the best coffee
New York is famous for having some of the best coffee in the world so it would be wrong to visit and not seek out some great cups. If you want my opinion, swerve Starbucks and head to Blue Bottle Coffee which has a few different locations - you can also pick up some freshly roasted beans to take home with you.
I can't make a list of my favourite things to do in New York without including shopping! I already mentioned that Williamsburg was a great place for quirky finds, but for all the big chains SoHo is great. I also love winding down all of the little streets in the West Village - keep an eye out for Carrie's stoop en route!
8) Watch a basketball game
You truly get a slice of American culture sitting in Madison Square Garden watching the Knicks play. The chants are passionate, the half time acts are cheesy and the snacks are plentiful. What more could you want?!
9) Take a stroll through Central Park
Central Park is beautiful no matter what time you visit, but in the autumn months the colours are simply incredible. It doesn't matter if you take a jog or stop for a picnic, just make sure you add it to your to do list. A great spot for people watching!
10) Watch the sunset from the Top of the Rock
Watching the sun go down whilst staring out at the Empire State Building and Central Park is one of the most incredible things I have ever done. Check what time sunset is due at and pre-book your tickets - it's well worth it to see the views at both day and night.
