Before and After: Our home office/attic room
The attic room is the one that really sold us on this house, despite it's less than ideal decor when we viewed it. The stairs to this space go up from our master bedroom which means it can't be classed as an official bedroom, but the conversion has been done to full height so it's a really functional space. We knew we wanted somewhere to use as a bit of a chillout/office space, as well as housing all of Sam's music equipment, and we knew this room was just perfect for that.
You can't really tell from these photos but the walls were painted the most yellow-y magnolia colour which made the room feel really old fashioned. The orange wood and seventies carpet really didn't help either, but we knew that with a bit of a refresh it could be a really bright and lovely space thanks to the Velux window.
We set to work almost immediately on giving all of the walls a few coats of white paint - in fact we started at about 8am the morning after collecting our keys, we were that keen! Even though we weren't painting over anything too dark it still took around 3 or 4 coats - every time we thought we had finished we'd spy another patch of magnolia poking through!
We also painted all of the wood work in the room with white gloss and ripped up the burgundy carpet and replaced it with a brighter cream one.
We wanted this room to be a good office/blogging space as well as being somewhere other than the living room that we could chill out in the evenings. We created our own desk at IKEA, choosing a table top and legs to customise something that we would really like. I also really wanted a Charles Eames style tub chair after fawning over them on Pinterest for the last 12 months and I ordered this one from a supplier on Amazon - I'm really pleased with how well it fits with the desk!
The lovely folk at Amara sent me some gorgeous bits from their Lexon range to help me style the desk up and I also added a little cacti collection from IKEA - I love that the accessories add a little Scandi touch. I'm still on the hunt for a nice desk lamp to complete the look, so let me know if you have any recommendations!
We decided to bring our armchair up so that we had a really nice little corner to relax in - I'm envisioning curling up here in the evenings with a cup of tea and a good book. The throw was a little TK Maxx bargain (but H&M have some similar ones!) and the cushion was from IKEA (are you sensing a theme yet...?). We also picked up a white Billy bookcase in another corner and I spent longer than I would like to admit colour coding our books... I still need to frame our Make Art Not War print that we picked up at the Tate and add some little bits and bobs on top of the bookcase, but I really like how this corner is coming together.
Along with Sam's guitar stand, the last bit of furniture we set up was a Kallax (also from IKEA!) which we are using to house all our records and some coffee table books. We've set one of our record players up on top (which thankfully fits in nicely with our white theme) and added a peace lily for some greenery, along with the copper candle holder which is also from Amara. We still need to play around with the styling on the shelves and maybe add some little trinkets, but for now I'm happy.
So there we have it - my first proper room tour! What do you guys think? I'm still on the hunt for some prints to hang so let me know any places you'd recommend for me to check out!
