My Rome Bucket List
In a couple of weeks we are off to Rome, a place that has been on my travel hit list for as long as I can remember. I am so excited to finally visit such a gorgeous and fascinating city and there is so much that I want to see and do there. I have been doing tonnes of research over the past week or so and making plans for our time there, so today I thought I'd share with you our Rome bucket list. Please let me know what else we need to add to the list - restaurant/bar/coffee recommendations especially welcome!
1) Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain always looks so incredible in photos and I can't wait to see it with my own eyes. Legend has it that if you throw three coins into the fountain then you will be guaranteed to visit Rome again, so I will definitely be giving that one a go.
2) Eat some gelato
I had my first taste of real Italian gelato when we visited Milan in May and it was amazing, so I can't wait to hunt some out in Rome too. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best place for gelato in Rome?
3) Walk the Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps are such an iconic sight in Rome and I can't wait to walk up them and sit at the top to take in the view. I also love the movie Roman Holiday, so I'll be doing my best Audrey Hepburn impression that day, for sure!
4) Visit the Colosseum
It would be a sacrilege to visit Rome without visiting perhaps the most famous ancient Roman monument, wouldn't it?! Everyone I know who has visited the Colosseum has marvelled at how impressive it is and I can't wait to see it.
5) Take in the view from St Peter's dome
I've heard that the view from the top of St Peter's dome is one of the best in the city and well worth the many steps! As we're visiting in September I'm hoping it will be a really clear day so we can really get a good view of Rome.
6) Visit the Vatican City
I really want to visit the Vatican City, if only to be able to tick another country off my list - it is the smallest country in the world! As well as St Peter's, I'm also really keen to visit the Sistine Chapel, mainly to see all of Michaelangelo's incredible work.
7) Find the best pizza
I've been dedicating a lot of my research to finding the best pizza in Rome - so far it looks like Da Remo, La Boccaccia and Da Franceso are all firm contenders - again, leave a comment if you know of any good spots!
8) Enjoy some rooftop drinks
The weather should still be pretty gorgeous when we visit so I really want to visit a rooftop bar or two for an Aperol spritz with views over the city. Our hotel has a pretty ace rooftop so I reckon we may end up doing this most evenings!
9) Do some people watching
One thing I'm really looking forward to is pulling up a seat in one of Rome's many beautiful squares and settling in for a spot of people watching over a strong coffee or an Aperol spritz. Hopefully the sun will shine for us too.
10) Explore Trastevere
Every post I have read about Rome has talked about the beauty of Trastevere and I am really itching to visit. Filled with cobbled streets and pretty buildings, it seems like the perfect place to while away a couple of hours.
Have you been to Rome before? What else do I need to add to my bucket list?
