The 4 Friends That Every Girl Needs
One of my favourite things about 2017 so far is that it's brought me lots of opportunities to spend quality time with my very excellent pals. From celebrating weddings and hen dos and birthdays with my oldest friends, to exploring a gorgeous city with fab ladies I've known for less than a year, I've had loads of BFF action and it's been GREAT. I've been thinking a lot recently about how lucky I am to have such a brilliant and varied tribe in my life. And so today I wanted to write about the 4 friends that every girl needs, both as a homage to my nearest and dearest, and also to show that we need lots of different types of mates in our life. Here goes...
1) The forever and ever friends
Okay, so let's start with the forever and ever friends. These are those girls you've been friends with for longer than you can remember, the ones who have been by your side through all of that painful growing up stuff and are still the people you want to call with the good news and the bad. These people are more like extended family than friends - they know you inside out, never forget the important stuff and aren't afraid to call you out on your bullshit from time to time. They've been in your life for so long that they've probably even helped shape you into the person you are today.
I'm lucky enough to have a few forever and ever friends - the girls who have seen me through everything from my very first boyfriend dramas to walking down the aisle with me as my bridesmaids. I don't get to see them half as much as I like, but whenever we're together it's like no time has passed at all. We all have very different lives and careers but they're always the people I turn to for advice because they just get me, and for that reason I know that they'll still be the people I'm turning to when I'm 90.
2) The fun time friends
These are the girls that no matter what you're doing, you always have a scream. They're the ones who you share your funniest anecdotes with - whether it's hilarious memories from your student days or tipsy holiday escapades. They're the best people to book that girly weekend away with, because from the minute you all meet up, you'll be laughing your head off. They're always up for a good night out and dinner can very easily turn into shots and dancing on tables within a couple of hours!
These friends are so important because they can help you to get through the difficult stuff. Whether it's the funny memes shared in the WhatsApp group during a dull Tuesday afternoon or the countdown to the annual mates holiday, their friendship provides the light relief that we so often need in life. Plus, whenever you're with them, you'll feel like a younger, hipper, more fun version of yourself, and as I creep closer to 30, that's even more necessary!
3) The can always count on them friends
These are the people who life would be so much more difficult without. They're the friends you call in a crisis, the ones who show up for every birthday dinner or life celebration, but most importantly, they're the ones who know how to help you without you ever needing to ask. You will probably only realise who these friends are when you experience something crappy, but this year has taught me that I'm lucky enough to have more than my fair share of them.
They're the ones who have texted me on difficult days, or checked in just because they haven't heard from me for a while and want to make sure I'm okay. They're the people who have sent me care packages in the post, or organised midweek dinners so that I had something to look forward to. I can wholeheartedly say that my life would have been a lot shittier without them in the past 12 months. These friends are rare and wonderful, so when you find them, cling on to them and let them know just how bloody important they are to you.
4) The personal cheerleaders
Last but by no means least are the personal cheerleaders. These are the gals that make you feel like freakin' wonder woman whenever you hang out with them, the ones who believe in you and are always on the sidelines cheering you on. They're the ones who send you a motivating text before a job interview, or encourage you to grasp that scary, exciting opportunity that comes your way because you absolutely deserve it.
My Mum and sister have always played this role in my life (as well as every other role on this list to be fair), but I love that my internet pals have become my own little tribe of personal cheerleaders in recent years too. They build my confidence, share my work and send me motivational messages whenever I need them. I can always count on them for advice and encourgaement and I hope I do the same for them.
So there you have it - the 4 friends that every girl needs. Do you agree?
